Explore Historic Virginia from Rockmill Farm Bed and Breakfast.
Because Rockmill Farm Bed and Breakfast is conveniently located right on the border of Amherst and Nelson counties, the inn offers its guests a perfect starting point for exploring many of the historic periods represented in Central Virginia.
Begin your stay in our Manor House, built in 1824 by William Macon Waller. William was the grandson of Benjamin Waller of Williamsburg, who read the Declaration of Independence from the court house steps in Colonial Williamsburg for the very first time. Our guest rooms, the Virginia Room and the Garland Room, were originally built for William's daughters and are styled in the decor of the period.
Tour Thomas Jefferson's Charlottesville.
Visit historic Charlottesville, and see how the city was shaped by the founding fathers of our country. The impact of Thomas Jefferson is evident not only at his home at Monticello, but also at the University of Virginia. You can also become familiar with James Monroe, President of the United States and diplomat, through his home at Ash Lawn-Highlands.
Visit historic Lexington.
Just 45 minutes away in the Blue Ridge Mountains is the city of Lexington. This charming area is home to two historic Virginia universities, the Virginia Military Institute, and Washington and Lee University. Many famous Confederate military leaders are buried in Lexington, including General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson and General Robert E. Lee.
Remember the fallen of two wars.
A short drive south of Rockmill Farm brings you to historic sites dedicated to the remembrance of two of America’s most destructive wars. Appomattox Court House was the scene of the final surrender of Confederate forces under the command of Robert E. Lee to Union General Ulysses S. Grant. In Bedford, just west of Lynchburg, you will find the National D-Day Memorial, which commemorates the assault to free Europe from the Nazis in World War II. The town of Bedford lost more men on D-Day than any other town in the United States.
No matter what part of Virginia's history holds your interest, Rockmill Farm Bed and Breakfast can be a part of your exploration. Check the map below for details, and watch the calendar on this page for special events occurring in the area.
